In yards and gardens all over Europe you can find little creatures affectionally referred to as gnomes. These cute little creatures have their origins in Germany. Since they first appeared in the 1800s these small creatures have traveled all over the world. They can now be found in gardens throughout the United States and many other places.

It helps to learn little bit about lawn gnomes to help you choose one for your yard. There are lawn gnomes made from a wide variety of materials. It is best to choose one made from a durable material. Some of the best materials to use for lawn gnomes are things such as ceramic, concrete, resin, and terra cotta.

Authentic lawn gnomes are always male. Other feature of authentic lawn gnomes are a beard and a red hat. Gnomes will usually be in a relaxed pose such as fishing or napping. Newer type of lawn gnomes can be found in more animated poses including some doing serious work. According to legend gnomes come out at night.

They are said to possess superior strength and the power to see into the future. This is why you cannot catch a lawn gnome. The three main categories of lawn gnomes are made up of culture gnomes, worker gnomes, and leisure gnomes. Worker gnomes can be found with small watering cans or other tools they may need.

Leisure gnomes are usually relaxing with a pipe or a fishing pole. Culture gnomes will often be reading books or playing an instrument. There should be a weather resistant base on any type of lawn gnome you select. Placing a gnome on a concrete block or stone will help it stand up to bad weather but it is still best to use a materials that will not rust or rot. Those looking for something really special may want to try out a lawn gnome which includes solar lights.
